Fragrance Basics: Understanding Perfume Strengths
Getting into fragrances can feel more complicated than it should be. You’ve got different scent notes, styles, and then another layer on top with terms like perfume, eau de parfum, eau de toilette, and cologne. Once you understand what those actually mean, it becomes a lot easier to choose something that actually suits you.
At its core, the difference comes down to concentration. That’s how much fragrance oil is blended into the formula. Higher concentration usually means stronger projection and longer wear time, but its performance can still vary depending on your skin, the weather, and how you apply it.
Here’s what you can realistically expect.
Perfume (Parfum / Extrait de Parfum)
This is the most concentrated form, typically 15 to 30% fragrance oil. You’re looking at around 8 to 12+ hours on skin in most cases. It sits closer to the skin, lasts the longest, and develops slowly over time.
Eau de Parfum (EDP)
A strong all-rounder, usually with a 10 to 15% concentration. Expect 6 to 8 hours of wear, sometimes longer depending on the fragrance. This is why it’s the most popular choice, it gives you performance without being too heavy.
Eau de Toilette (EDT)
Lighter again, sitting around 5 to 10%. You’ll generally get 3 to 5 hours before it starts to fade. It’s fresher and easier to wear, especially during the day or in warmer conditions.
Eau de Cologne (EDC)
The lightest option is at roughly 2 to 5%. Expect around 1 to 3 hours of wear. It’s more of a quick refresh than something designed to last all day.
If You Can’t Smell It After a While, Don’t Stress
One of the biggest mistakes people make is thinking their fragrance has disappeared. In most cases, it hasn’t. What’s happening is nose fatigue. Your brain gets used to the scent and tunes it out, especially if it’s been on you for a while. Meanwhile, other people can still smell it just fine. This is why over-spraying becomes a problem; you think it’s gone, but everyone else is getting hit with it.
How to Store Your Fragrances Properly
Keep your fragrances sealed, away from heat, sunlight, and humidity. A cool, dry spot is ideal, and keeping them in their box helps protect them. Most fragrances will stay in good condition for around three years when stored properly.
